Coffee Shop Meets Art Gallery

What You Actually Get When You Visit

You walk in and your coffee’s ready in under 30 seconds. Not because we’re cutting corners—because we’ve installed commercial bean-to-cup machines that do the work while you pick what you want. No barista small talk required. No wondering if today’s batch tastes like yesterday’s.

While you’re there, you’re surrounded by actual art. Real pieces from NYC artists who rotate through every few weeks. You can buy directly from them if something catches your eye. No gallery admission. No pressure. Just good work on the walls and the option to take it home.

It’s a coffee shop when you need speed. It’s a workspace cafe when you need WiFi and a table. It’s an art gallery when you want to look at something other than your screen. You decide how you use it.

Art Cafe on Thompson Street

We Opened Because NYC Needed This

We’re located at 168 Thompson Street in Greenwich Village. We launched in 2023 with a simple idea: stop making people choose between good coffee, fast service, and an environment worth being in.

North Valley Stream and the surrounding areas don’t have a ton of options that blend art and caffeine without the pretension. You’ve got corporate chains that feel sterile. You’ve got indie spots with 20-minute waits. You’ve got galleries that make you feel like you need an appointment.

We built something different. Self-serve tech handles the drinks. Local artists handle the walls. You handle whatever you came here to do. We’re not trying to be your third place or your creative sanctuary—we’re just trying to get out of your way while giving you something better to look at than drywall.

How Our Workspace Cafe Works

Walk In, Get Coffee, Do Your Thing

You order from the self-serve station. Pick your drink, pay with your phone or card, and the machine starts brewing. Takes about 25 seconds start to finish. The system’s the same tech Starbucks uses in their automated locations, so the consistency’s there.

Grab your cup and find a seat. We’ve got tables if you’re working. We’ve got standing room if you’re just passing through. WiFi’s free and it actually works—no constant reconnecting or speed drops during video calls.

The art on our walls changes every month or so. Each show features a different NYC artist. If you see a piece you want, there’s a QR code next to it. Scan it, contact the artist, buy direct. We don’t take a cut. The price you see is what they’re asking.

If you want a snack, we carry Magnolia Bakery items. Same deal—grab what you want, pay at the counter, keep moving. No upcharges. No surprise fees at checkout. The price on the tag is the price you pay.

About The Café Galerie

Artsy Cafes Near North Valley Stream

What Makes This Different From Other Spots

Most coffee shops in the area fall into two camps. You’ve got the fast chains with no personality, or you’ve got the slow indie spots where you’re waiting 15 minutes for a latte while someone argues about oat milk. Neither one’s giving you art. Neither one’s giving you a reason to stay beyond the caffeine.

North Valley Stream’s about 30 minutes from us depending on traffic. If you’re coming from Long Island, Thompson Street’s accessible via the LIE or Southern State. Street parking’s tough like anywhere in the Village, but there’s a lot on Bleecker if you’re driving. Most people take the train—we’re a short walk from West 4th.

Our space is small but functional. You’re not going to host a birthday party here, but you’ll find a seat during off-peak hours. Mornings get busy with remote workers. Afternoons are quieter. Evenings bring in the art crowd when there’s a new show opening.

We’re not trying to be a wedding venue or event space. We’re a cafe to work near when you need to get out of your apartment. A place to study when the library’s too quiet and the chain spots are too loud. A coffee shop that doesn’t waste your time and gives you something to look at while you’re there.

A view inside a museum with classical architecture, tall columns, and balconies. Several people are observing sculptures and displays, while soft lighting highlights the artwork and ornate details of the space.

What's the difference between your artwork cafe and a regular coffee shop?

The coffee’s faster and the walls aren’t blank. That’s the short version.

The longer version: we use self-serve machines that get your drink ready in under 30 seconds. You’re not waiting in line behind someone ordering a complicated drink with five modifications. You pick what you want on a screen, the machine brews it, you grab it and go. The quality’s consistent because it’s the same commercial equipment that chains use—just without the chain atmosphere.

The art part isn’t decorative. We rotate local NYC artists through the space every month. These are real exhibitions with real work you can purchase. You’re not looking at mass-produced prints or stock photography. You’re seeing what emerging artists in the city are actually making right now. If you want to buy a piece, you contact the artist directly through a QR code. We don’t mark it up or take a commission.

You can work. People do it every day. It’s not a library, but it’s not a nightclub either.

Our space is small enough that it doesn’t get the echo effect you get in bigger cafes. Conversations happen, but they’re not overwhelming. There’s no music blasting. The coffee machines are quieter than traditional espresso setups because they’re automated—no steam wands screaming or grinders running constantly.

WiFi’s reliable. We’re running commercial-grade internet, not residential. You can take calls, run video meetings, upload files—whatever you need. Seating’s limited, so mornings can fill up with other remote workers. If you need a guaranteed spot, come after 11 or before 8. Afternoons between 2 and 4 are usually your best bet for space and quiet.

A standard coffee runs between $3 and $5 depending on size and type. Specialty drinks are $5 to $7. That’s what you pay. No surprises at checkout.

We don’t add service fees, convenience charges, or suggested tips on top of the listed price. The self-serve model means there’s no tipping expectation—you’re doing the work yourself. If you order a medium latte and it says $4.50 on the screen, you’re paying $4.50 plus tax. That’s it.

Magnolia Bakery items are priced individually and marked on the display. A slice of cake is usually $6 to $8. A cupcake is around $5. Again, the price you see is the price you pay. We’re not inflating things because we’re in Greenwich Village or because there’s art on the walls. You’re getting the same pricing structure you’d find at the actual Magnolia Bakery location.

It works for both. The setup’s casual enough that you can meet a friend for coffee without it feeling formal, but focused enough that solo work doesn’t feel awkward.

Tables are small—mostly two-seaters with a few four-tops. If you’re meeting someone, you’ll have space to sit and talk without being on top of other people. The art gives you something to discuss if the conversation lulls. It’s not a loud social scene, so you can actually hear each other.

For solo work, you’re not the only one there with a laptop. It’s a common use case, so you won’t feel out of place camping out for a few hours. Just be reasonable—if it’s packed and people are waiting for seats, maybe don’t spread out for a six-hour marathon. But on a normal day, you’re fine to settle in and work through your task list.

Our exhibitions rotate roughly every four to six weeks depending on the artist’s availability and the show’s reception. We work directly with emerging NYC artists who are building their portfolios and looking for exposure.

Each piece has a QR code next to it with the artist’s contact info and the price. You scan it, reach out to the artist, and handle the transaction with them. We’re not the middleman. We’re just providing the wall space and the foot traffic. The artist sets their own prices and keeps 100% of the sale.

Most pieces range from $200 to $2,000 depending on size and medium. You’re getting original work at fair prices because there’s no gallery taking a 40% commission. If you’re coming from North Valley Stream or anywhere on Long Island and you’re interested in supporting local artists without the intimidation factor of a traditional gallery, this is a low-pressure way to do it. Come in, look around, drink your coffee. If something speaks to you, the buying process is straightforward.

We’re not a full restaurant. It’s coffee, Magnolia Bakery items, and that’s the menu. If you’re looking for a lunch spot or a place to grab dinner, this isn’t it.

Our Magnolia Bakery partnership gives you access to their cakes, cupcakes, and pastries in a smaller setting than their main locations. You’re getting the same quality—we’re stocking directly from them. If you want a slice of their banana pudding or a red velvet cupcake with your coffee, we’ve got it. If you want a sandwich or a salad, you’ll need to go somewhere else.

The limited menu is intentional. We’re optimized for speed and simplicity. You’re in and out in under a minute if you want to be, or you can stay and work for a few hours with a coffee and a snack. We’re not trying to be everything to everyone. We’re trying to be really good at a specific thing: fast coffee, real art, and a space that doesn’t waste your time.
